Orthopedic Care Without Delays: How the Wayne Pavilion is Changing the Referral Experience

For many referring providers, sending a patient for orthopedic care is not just about clinical expertise. It comes down to access, speed, and confidence in what happens next. How quickly will the patient be seen? Will they get a clear diagnosis without unnecessary delays? And will care feel coordinated or fragmented?

At Atlantic Health’s Wayne Pavilion, the focus is on removing those uncertainties. The model is designed to move patients efficiently from evaluation to diagnosis to treatment, without sacrificing clinical judgment along the way.

For orthopedic surgeon James Ryan, MD, that balance starts with a thoughtful approach to care.

“My approach to treatment, I tend to be pretty conservative at first,” he says. “Surgery is a big deal and I don’t take that lightly. The first thing is to identify who needs surgery quickly to prevent future problems. Beyond that, I try to exhaust nonoperative treatment, and that’s a shared decision-making process with the patient.”

That mindset aligns with what referring physicians expect. The difference at Wayne Pavilion is how quickly that plan can be put into motion.

A More Direct Path from Injury to Diagnosis

Orthopedic injuries rarely happen on a predictable schedule. Weekend injuries, in particular, often lead to delays that stretch into the following week.

At Wayne Pavilion, those delays can often be avoided.

“I had a patient call on a Monday morning after getting injured playing sports over the weekend,” Dr. Ryan says. “They came in the same day. I evaluated them, suspected an ACL tear, and ordered an MRI.”

What followed reflects the advantage of having imaging and care teams in one location.

“We were able to send the patient directly to imaging, get approval through insurance, complete the MRI that same day, and then review the results together,” he explains. “By the end of the visit, we had a plan in place, including physical therapy. I even walked the patient over to meet the therapy team.”

In many care settings, that process unfolds over several weeks. At Wayne Pavilion, it can happen in a single day.

Built for Speed, Without Sacrificing Clinical Judgment

Wayne Pavilion brings together a multidisciplinary team in a single location. That level of integration allows care teams to move quickly while maintaining a deliberate approach to treatment decisions.

“It’s really a one-stop shop,” Dr. Ryan says. “We have orthopedics across multiple subspecialties, physical therapy, advanced imaging, and additional services all in one place. The amount we’re able to offer patients here makes a big difference in how quickly we can move.”

This structure is particularly valuable for acute injuries, where early evaluation can change the course of care. Patients can often be seen the same day, undergo immediate imaging when needed, and leave with a clear plan.

Dr. Ryan notes that this access also helps define appropriate referral timing. Acute injuries warrant prompt evaluation, while more chronic issues should be considered for referral when symptoms persist despite conservative management. When pain continues after several weeks of rest, therapy, or other treatments, a more specialized orthopedic evaluation becomes important.

Coordination That Extends Beyond the Visit

Timely diagnosis is only one part of the equation. Recovery depends heavily on what happens after the initial visit, particularly when physical therapy is involved.

“Surgery is the easy part,” Dr. Ryan says. “The hard part is for the patient to rehabilitate properly.”

That reality shapes how he approaches surgical decision-making. Patients are not taken to surgery without a clear rehabilitation plan already in place.

“I typically don’t operate on a patient until I know that they have their post-operative physical therapy and protocol already lined up,” he explains.

At Wayne Pavilion, that coordination happens in real time. Physicians and physical therapists operate within the same environment, which allows for more direct communication and better visibility into patient progress. That continuity helps reduce gaps in care and keeps recovery on track.

Reducing Friction for Referring Physicians

For referring providers, one of the most consistent challenges is the time lost between steps in the care journey. Scheduling delays, imaging bottlenecks, and fragmented follow-up can quickly add up.

The Wayne Pavilion model is built to reduce that friction.

“When you have a one stop shop like we have at the Wayne Pavilion, it helps avoid delays in care,” Dr. Ryan says. “We are typically able to see patients the same day of their referral, if not the same day, definitely the next day.”

That level of access gives referring physicians more confidence in when their patients will be evaluated and how quickly a plan will be established. It also creates a more predictable experience for patients, which ultimately reflects back on the referring provider.

A More Efficient Path Forward

Dr. Ryan’s experience treating high-level athletes continues to shape his expectations for care delivery. The goal is not just to treat the injury, but to do so in a way that is efficient, coordinated, and aligned with the patient’s goals.

At Wayne Pavilion, that approach is supported by an environment designed to minimize delays and streamline care.

For referring physicians, the benefit is clear. Patients gain faster access to evaluation, imaging, and therapy, all within a coordinated setting that prioritizes both outcomes and experience.
